Local carpenter Cooper McCormick works to repair the paddlewheel on Winona’s steamboat welcome sign. “I grew up in Winona and getting to work on a piece of town history was something I was more than excited to do,” McCormick said. A decade ago, the mini steamboat was in rough shape and volunteers coalesced to fix it up and get the paddlewheel spinning again. Now, the city is paying for the carpentry work and materials as well as for the paint for volunteers. Volunteer Taff Roberts said they plan to clean the steamboat, scrape it down, and repaint it. “We’ve got some festivals coming up, and it’s going to look beautiful when it’s done,” Roberts said. "I want to thank all the people who worked on this for the past 20 years to get this where it is today. It’s a symbol for our city.”
