Sep 14, 2023Tick season is in full swing in Nebraska: Here’s how you can prepare
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Summer is in full swing and with more people heading outside, you may notice more ticks starting to catch on.
While they can bite year-round, their peak season is from April to October in Nebraska, according to Extension Educator at UNL, Kait Chapman.
Chapman educates within Urban Entomology, but is also a Program Area Leader at UNL in Horticulture, Landscape, and Environmental Systems.
She says tall grass and wooded areas are the most common places they can crawl up. Chapman adds that some ways to protect yourself are by wearing tick repellant and tucking your pants into your socks.
When checking for ticks in a full body search, some key spots to search are behind your ears, inside your belly button, and behind your knees.
“If you ever get bit by a tick, a good first step is to have it identified because different types of ticks will transmit different diseases. And so knowing what type of tick bit you, will help rule out certain things,” said Chapman.
One of the ticks that can transmit diseases, like rocky mountain fever, is the American Dog Tick.
Fortunately, Chapman says there’s fewer than six active cases of rocky mountain fever in Nebraska right now.
